FAQs

How much does it cost?

It only costs £100 per year - less than Netflix and guaranteed more magical! Unlike some other magic clubs, we host up to 17 lectures a year (and two competitions) and have world class lecturer magicians visit us. Previous lecturers include Gregory Wilson, Wayne Dobson, John Archer and Morgan & West! If you’re not sure, you can come along to one of our lectures on an ad hoc basis for just £10 per lecture. Check out our club calendar to see what’s coming up and email our friendly club secretary to let us know you’re coming down.

I’m not a professional magician, can I still join?

Yes, absolutely! The majority of our members are not full-time working professionals, but rather very keen hobbyists who love performing for friends and family. We are very lucky though to have quite a few full-time magicians in our club, so if you are struggling with a particular magic trick or card move, there’s plenty of experienced magicians on hand to give you some advice.

How old do I have to be?

The minimum age to come to lectures is 18 years old, while our annual magic competitions (which are open to the public) can be attended by under 18s if they are accompanied by an adult. We don’t have an upper age limit - hurrah!

Do I have to take an exam to become a member?

No - while the Surrey Magic Council does review all applications, there is no formal examination to become a member of The Surrey Society of Magicians. You just need to demonstrate a keen interest in magic, pay the annual subscription fee and you’re in! If you want to bring along some magic to show us on your first visit we’d love that, but there’s no pressure to do any magic for anyone (unless you enter either our annual close-up or stage magic competition, in which case you 100% need to do some magic to be in with a chance of winning).
